English has several domains in which I can be helpful.
- English as another language: if you are learning English as a second (or third or fourth…) language, I can help with all domains of the language: speaking, listening, writing, reading, and sociocultural. I focus on leading students toward contextual understanding, rather than focusing on memorization and repetition. If you memorize, you are limited to what you have memorized. If you understand, you can make relevant decisions in a variety of situations. Let’s understand English.
- English reading and writing: for those of us who have grown up speaking English yet who need a deeper comprehension of the structures of English as a written language, I can provide insight. And, I hope, inspiration. If you think The Cat in the Hat is about a cat who wears a hat, we can do better. If you think that writing a whole paragraph, or an executive summary, or a dissertation, etc., is going to ruin your day, we can do better. Let’s do better.
- English linguistics: For those of us who crave all of the details, I’m happy to delve into the minutiae of how the English language works, or doesn’t work. Systematic curiosity about a language can expand understanding in diverse domains. Let’s explore.
